After graduating from Nagoya Fashion College in 2001, Atsushi Nakashima entered the New Lead Factory. In 2003, he won the 20th Onward Fashion Grand Prix (now known as the Tokyo New Designer Fashion Grand Prix). Year after he moved to Paris and was working as Jean Paul Gaultier's assistant.
Before assisting JPG, Nakashima was heavily influenced by Comme des Garcons and credits his time in Paris, working on haute couture, for bringing an appreciation of classic foundations and an appreciation of the highest quality fabrics to his designs.
He returned to Japan in 2011 to start his brand ATSUSHI NAKASHIMA.
